Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 2 (3D): Good popcorn entertainment

 

Still overweight, cuddly and clueless, Po (again, an endearing voice over by Jack Black) and the furious five face a new challenge from an evil white Peacock Shen (Gary Oldman), who is hell-bent on conquering China and  destroying Kung Fu forever. The bringing in of 3D, adds leverage to the action sequences, and the consistent humour keeps the proceedings breezy.

In 90-odd minutes, the sequel is a whirlwind ride, here we must thank the writers who ensure the gags keep coming. The voice overs are all spot on and the animation top class, if the film lacks anything, it is a little bit of heart, which the first one had ample servings of. This is a minor quibble, for all through Kung Fu Panda 2 there is hardly any loose end. Go for it, though 3D does add to the viewing experience, 2D viewing should be enjoyable too.               

DVD picks: Be Kind Rewind

A little sweet comedy, Be Kind Rewind may be a bit contrived but it doesn't disappoint. To cut the story short, Mike and Jerry end up making their own versions of the biggest Hollywood hits after all the VHS tapes they give out on rent go blank (due to a liberty the screenplay writers had to take for setting up the comedy). Moreover, they also include the whole neighbourhood as extras in the films, only adding to the popularity of the store.

Surprisingly these 20-minute versions are a hit, but now with the store owner back from a holiday, and film studios suing for copyright violation, there is one last film to make.

The storyline is thin, and the film mostly hangs on the innovative remake of films like Ghostbusters, Rush Hour 2 and Driving Miss Daisy. Jack Black stands out and adds energy and much needed warmth to the weak screenplay.

A pleasant watch.

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda: Inventive, Funny Animation

KEEYAAW! HEEYAW! Its Kung-Fu time again...

A real funny kung fu movie inevitably set in China has the very apt voices of Jack Black as an obese Panda and Dunstin Hoffman as the 'master'. Both are inventive in their voice modulations and the animation does the rest of the trick. Then there is kung fu destiny talk, with the chosen one all fat filled, a menacing villain and oodles of cracking lines. A delight for animation fans and of course kung fu fanatics!

Here is a sequel to the previous post. Jack Black, seen earlier in the wonderfully comic School of Rock, and Peter Jackson's creativily high King Kong is back.
Here he is again, teaching Kungfu. For those who came in late, Black is the voice of the Panda, in Dreamworks summer release- Kungfu Panda.
